Providing the best care for a child’s oral health requires a special kind of dentist. A Pediatric Dentist has 2 additional years of training after dental school to learn how to take better care of children!
Believe it or not, providing dental care for a child is very different from that of an adult. From the anatomical differences of childhood to the special behavioral concerns of children, our pediatric dental specialists are prepared to provide the best possible care for your child. All of our staff are also well trained in caring for children.
Here at FUNtastic Dental, we strive to make every child’s visit the best dental experience possible. We offer high-tech technologies such as The Magic Wand, which is a nearly pain-free injection. Your child can relax with Nitrous-Oxide (laughing gas) which will raise pain tolerance and make getting dental treatment anxiety-free and worry-free for you and them! For more extensive dental treatment, we also offer in-office general anesthesia (sleep dentistry) for children. Should a higher level of expertise be needed, we provide referrals to the finest specialists in our area.
From their very first dental visit and beyond, FUNtastic Dental is proud to offer pediatric dental care for young patients of Long Beach, CA. Check out the information below to learn more about the technologies we use to aid in giving your child the best possible dental experience.
The Magic Wand
One of the main reasons people love our office is because we do EVERYTHING possible to make sure your child doesn’t feel a thing! One of our goals is to make pain, fear, and anxiety, when going to the dentist, be a thing of the past! We know that some patients get more nervous than others do at the mere sight of a needle and syringe. That’s why we now perform all anesthetic injections with a revolutionary system called “The MAGIC WAND”, a Computer Controlled Local Anesthesia Delivery System!
Whether injections make your child nervous or not, “The MAGIC WAND” helps us provide a more effective anesthetic delivery. Your children are more comfortable throughout the procedure, and we use new techniques so they won’t experience the lingering numbness of their tongue, lips and face.
Those long, sharp needles? In our office, they’re a thing of the past, as we offer other sedation techniques such as IV or nitrous oxide to make our patients’ visits virtually pain-free. And by doing everything we can to ensure your child doesn’t feel an ounce of pain, we’re eliminating the fear and anxiety associated with child dental visits!
Conscious Sedation and General Anesthesia
Conscious Sedation: Laughing Gas
Pediatric Sedation is a safe and simple option that allows even the most hesitant and resistant of little patients to experience a fun and happy trip to the dentist’s office.
The key to ensuring that a child leaves each check-up with a smile is to make sure – from the moment they walk through the office door – that they’re comfortable.
For most children, this is pretty easy to achieve. A parent in the treatment room and taking the time to “Show-Tell-Do” are usually all it takes.
But for some patients, thanks to a prior experience or other factors, it takes a bit more than this. It’s for these patients that Pediatric Sedation Dentistry becomes an option.
Depending on the patient’s unique situation, they will be treated using one of two sedation methods: Conscious Sedation or General Anesthesia.
During restorative appointments, nitrous oxide is often administered so that patients may remain conscious and responsive throughout their procedure, while eliminating nervousness and worry during the visit. It is one of the safest sedatives in dentistry, is completely non-addictive, and is quickly eliminated from the body through normal breathing.

In rare instances, a child may not be able to be treated while awake or under conscious sedation, whether due to their young age, combativeness, or extensive amount of treatment. For these patients we provide the option of general anesthesia (sleep dentistry) at FUNtastic Dental. Your child will be under the direct supervision of our professional anesthesiologist, Dr. John Khalaf, throughout their entire anesthetic. The anesthesiologist is responsible to ensure your child’s safety and comfort. If you have additional questions, please contact our office to speak directly with our sedation experts. We’re always eager to listen to your concerns and provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding your child’s dental care.
