If your child is getting braces, you have a few different options. The main options are metal braces, clear braces, and aligners such as Invisalign. There are key benefits of all of these options, but in particular, here is a look at the reasons you may want to consider clear braces for your child.
The main reason most people turn to ceramic or clear braces is because they are less noticeable. Your child may want to blend into the crowd, especially if they are in middle school, junior high, or high school, and clear braces make it a lot easier to do that. They aren’t as noticeable as metal braces in particular.
If you have family pictures coming up and you want your child’s braces to be more subtle, this is a great option. Both the ceramic brackets and the wires are the color of your child’s teeth.
Works with Rubber Bands
That said, kids can change their minds. One day, a child may want braces that are completely unnoticeable, and the next day, the child may want braces that have colorful rubber bands. You may especially notice this trend if your child’s friends have braces.
Luckily, with clear braces, you can almost get the best of both worlds. Your child can go for clear rubber bands if they want to be subtle, or they can opt for bright colors if they need a change. Your orthodontist can make the change at your regular appointments.
Impossible to Lose
In some cases, if being less noticeable is your main objective, you may want to consider Invisalign, but keep in mind that Invisalign aligners are removable. As a result, your child may lose them. With clear braces, you have the benefits of being less noticeable, but as they are permanent, you never have to worry about your child losing them.
Easier to See Debris
When your child has braces, oral hygiene is extremely important. Food and debris can gather around the edges of the braces, and if it’s not brushed or rinsed away, it can lead to cavities. Unfortunately, with metal braces, it’s sometimes hard to see the debris that is collecting on your child’s teeth. Dark items in particular may blend in with the braces, but in contrast, clear braces are the color of your child’s teeth. As a result, if there is any debris on the teeth, it is easier to see. Then you can remind your child to brush and floss.
As Effective as Metal Braces
Clear braces work just like metal braces. That means they have brackets and wires to pull them together. If your child just has a few crooked teeth, a bite that needs to be fixed or almost any other issue, you can easily repair that with clear braces. They are extremely effective. In contrast, certain other options like Invisalign or Six Month Smiles really only work for certain issues.
